Step 1:

  • Gabions are delivered to site flat-packed in compressed bundles
  • Unfold each gabion on a hard, flat surface
  • Stretch it out and stamp out the factory folds

Step 2:

  • Fold the side and end panels to make a box
  • Join the top corners with the selvedge (thick wire) sticking out from the corners

Step 3:

  • Secure the binding wire at the top corners of the panels
  • Lace the edges using the double and single loop technique along the wire mesh openings
  • Allow for 100mm between loops

Step 4:

  • Lace several gabions into line along all side-by-side surfaces
  • Move into place

Step 5:

  • After joining sections of gabions and putting into position, stretch the empty gabions using an H-frame (drawings can be provided) or use the Spanish windlass method

Step 6:

  • Gabions are filled in 3 stages
  • Fill the gabion only to 1/3 height first with level surface on top

Step 7:

  • Brace by laying wires flat across filling, loop through two mesh openings and tighten by twisting
  • Use a stone to stop untwisting
  • Using pre-formed bracing wire can speed up step 6.1.2

Step 8:

  • 6.2 After fixing bracing at 1/3 height, full the gabions to 2/3 and repeat the bracing process
  • 6.3 Complete filling. Gabions should be over-filled by ± 50mm

Step 9:

  • Lever lid into place using a gabion closing tool or crowbar and lace closed
